Tooth decay in children

Tooth Decay is very common. If left untreated it can lead to pain, infection and may even impact the developing adult teeth. Public Health England (2015) found that ¼ of 5 year olds had experienced tooth decay.

Baby teeth are more susceptible to tooth decay. This risk is increased for children that have a high intake of sugary or starchy foods.

The good news is decay is preventable. A good oral hygiene routine and regular visits to the dentist will help protect your child’s teeth.

Children’s Dentistry FAQs

When should children first visit the dentist?

You should start taking your child to the dentist after their first tooth appears – this is usually around 6 months old. The dentist will look out for any oral health concerns and can advise how to avoid dental diseases.

Is it important to look after baby teeth?

While baby teeth aren’t permanent, they’re vital for speaking, eating, and guiding new adult teeth into position. So, it’s essential to take good care of them.
